Death Valley | 2012

At the last minute last week we realized that the kids had a 5-day weekend from school before Littler started preschool, so we decided to drive down to Death Valley and camp for a few days. We had no idea what we were going to do there, but it sounded like fun so we packed the car and drove off.

The first morning we headed out to Mesquite Dunes, which were absolutely awesome. We just played around in the sand forever.

Clothes slowly became less and less mandatory.

We saw a pair of huge dunes in the distance and decided to conquer them.

And conquer them we did. These kids are awesome hikers.

We decided to run right down the steepest part of the dune. It was wild. Dunes are awesome.

There's a sweet place near the bottom of the valley, a couple hundred feet below sea level, where salt deposits and dried mud form crazy jagged pillars. It's called the Devil's Golf Course and was impressively impenetrable.

We wandered around Badwater Basin, the lowest spot in the Western Hemisphere, and was just as starkly gorgeous as all the NatGeo pictures suggest.

The next morning we went back to the dunes. Why not? They're awesome. Mommy ran 5.5 miles in the thickest air she'll ever breathe.

There's a giant volcanic crater that's only a couple hundred years old and we explored around the rim. Little just loves volcanoes.

There was a little minor caldera right next to the main one and Little wanted to run down into it. When she did, she enthusiastically described how volcanoes go BOOOOM.

There's a really bizarre extravagant 90-year-old pseudo-Spanish-style villa in a side-canyon of Death Valley. We discovered that the lavish gate actually has dedicated quarters for the gatekeeper, surrounded by a pupfish-filled micro-moat. It's really silly but it was also super fun to explore.

We went back to a place we'd been to the previous day, a super salty creek called Salt Creek. The kids--as always--were obsessed with playing in the water. It lasted like 5 minutes before every square inch of skin exposed to the water became bright red and stung. It was OK, it was worth it.

Daddy went on a night walk right out into the desert at night time. He found a bush.

The mornings were epically cuddly. Guess what this morning was? Little's 6th birthday! Littlest was excited for her.

We saw a total of 3 mammals in Death Valley, and two were sick-looking and disturbingly unwary. DV is not kind to animals.

We planned a very special outing for Little's birthday. We parked in a gravel pit and climbed up the alluvial plain of a canyon that drains into Badwater Basin. For some reason, we just love off-trail exploring and find it almost infinitely more enjoyable than trail hiking. We found a total of four slot canyons branching off the main canyon. We explored them all.

The kids had new confidence after their climbing trip to Castle Rock, and totally rocked the rocks.

The slot canyons were so deep and so narrow that in places they got pitch black and we needed lights.

One of the slot canyons had periodic sheer drops of 4-10 feet that Little just geckoed right up despite the fact that we forgot to bring her real shoes.

We found a kangaroo rat running around in broad daylight. That was very weird.

The third slot canyon was by far the best. The entrance was a squirm but it opened up into beautiful, shaped walls with great light.

It also got completely pitch black.

Overall, the kids hiked about 5 miles with tons of scrambling and climbing, lots of elevation gain and pretty much great spirits all around. It was a major highlight of the trip and a stupendous way to spend Little's birthday.

We let Little pick her own special birthday dinner from the National Park general store. Yes, we ate Doritos, Easy Mac and carrot cake for dinner. MMMmblublublbulbulbubl. As a birthday candle proxy, Little blew out the stove lighter. Happy 6th, Not-so-Little!

Top-roping the Fellinators

Somehow Daddy pulled off the barter-deal of the millennium by landing a day of climbing instruction by his friend J-Rad in exchange for a demo of hummus making. Daddy wonders when J-Rad will realize he's been had.

One of the awesome things about living here is we can just hop in the car and less than an hour later start climbing some world-class boulders and rock formations at Castle Rock. In February. J-Rad's son Danger, Little and Littler were all super excited to get climbing when they arrived and they just went off climbing and discovering caves for at least an hour. That was pretty awesome.

There was some stupefyingly glorious light when we arrived:

The kids just got right to climbing stuff:

The Dads spent quite a while climbing various routes of Castle Rock [Daddy of course on the easier routes]. But then the kids wanted to top-rope themselves, so:

Danger got himself successfully up to a nice ledge but then got stranded dangling upside-down. He started yelling, "This is danger! This is danger! I'm going to die! This is danger!!" It was pretty awesome; everybody came over to watch Danger in danger:

Littler said she would like to climb, but when it really came to it, she was silently terrified:

Daddy was pretty proud of her still. She had a silent little blast bounding on the rope on the short rappel down:

Little did some free soloing. Or, well, just climbing a little bit. She was pretty awesome though:

Daddy is absurdly proud of Little:

Mommy definitely tried to keep Daddy from leaving the house wearing that. But he insisted.

So here's J-Rad, the man we're not nearly as in-debt to as we should be. Thanks a ton!

Previous years:

2011
2008

1. How do you know when you're in love?

Littlest [1.75]: [breathing heavily, licks mommy in the face]
Littler [4]: [nods]
Little [almost 6]: Um, um, I don't know, Dad.

2. Why do people get married?

Littlest: this, ow up, duwee wuh wuh [cuddles with Mommy]
Littler: 'Cause they're special.
Little: Um, I forget, but I know something that happens when they get married. A few months later they have a baby. That's all I know.

3. How old should you be when you get married?

Littlest: ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba!!!
Littler: I don't know.
Little: A little bit older than twenty.

4. Where do you want to get married?

Littlest: [grabs hid diaper and pulls out the wipes, starts tearing them into pieces and throwing them on the floor, then grabs his diaper with two hands, monsters the computer keyboard and generally runs around the room hooliganizing]
Littler: At the temple.
Little: Um, I don't know.

5. What qualities do you look for in a boy/girl?

Littlest: [grabs the rest of the wipes and flings them across the room, then tackles Mommy's legs from behind and sticks his head between her legs like a goat getting milked.]
Littler: [blinking a lot] You have cracks in your eye. You know why? 'Cause you're a Dad.
Little: We don't have to look for short hair. [why not?] Because some boys don't have haircuts as often as most boys do.

6. What's romance?

Littlest: Dai-dai [he actually steps on the computer, then runs over and empties Littler's shoe box]
Littler: I don't know.
Little: I don't know.

7. What would be a fun date?

Littlest: Di? Diaaaaa. [grabs Mommy's backpack and hurls it to the floor] Wah wah WWWAAAH! [Picks up a pair of Little's pants and puts them on his head like a hat, twirling around until he crashes from dizzyness, comes over to the computer, bangs his head on the keyboard and starts biting the monitor. He is now running around with the pants again trying to eat them.]

Littler: [nods] I would do that every day. [what?] Go with a boy every day.
Little: What's a date? [explain] Does it have to be a grownup? [explain]. Grownups? Not for, like, me? [explain] You mean if I was this age? [explain] Um, I don't know.

8. What do you want to get for Valentine's Day?

Littlest: Da-da-dai. Dan-dime-daii. [Runs toward front door and slams himself into it. Repeat. Chases Littler until he catches her, riccochets off and falls onto the ground. Runs into the front door so hard he starts screaming and needs Mom].
Littler:Um, I think heart cookies, and the thing Tori got for us. Heart cookies that are big, and they are yummy!
Little: Something that Tori's giving me... and something that's going to be cooked crayons, and it looks shaped like a heart and some are shaped like a flower.

9. Why do men give women flowers or chocolate?

Littlest: [Points and computer].
Littler: 'Cause they billd. [they build?] Not really. [?]
Little: 'Cause they love them?

10. What do you think about kissing?

Littlest, with huge goose egg on forehead: [Laughing hysterically, runs back and slams into the front door, then comes back and tackles Mom. Then he gives her a great big kiss on the lips.]
Littler: I don't know!
Little: Love.

11. How many kids will you have after you are married?

Littlest: [slams into the door again, tackles Mom again, bites her shoulder, pats her softly on the cheek].
Littler: I don't know. One or two. Or three. Or four.
Little: Maybe six.

12. What will you wear when you get married?

Littlest: [turns the piano off, tries to hide in the blinds, throws himself on Mommy then head-first into the floor].
Littler: A white dress.
Little: The question is, Dad, what did you give mom when you guys got married? That's my question. [I gave her a ring]. Did you give her anything else? [Um, no. I gave her myself] Yeah, everybody gives some people themselves.

13. What will your husband/wife look like?

Littlest: [tackles Littler, tackles Mom]
Littler: The one that we already have.
Little: I don't know quite yet. He definitely looks like a boy. And you look like a boy because you don't have long hair [talking to Daddy].

14. How can you tell your parents love each other?

Littlest: [hugs Daddy's leg] No, no. Dadobah. [Slams into the door. Starts taking parts off the vacuum and dances like a crazy monster until he overwhelms Littler, who runs away. Tackles Mom over and over again. Hits mom, the computer and Littler with vacuum attachments. When Littler takes the vacuum attachments away, he runs sad to Mommy but decides instead to put on Little's shoes and stomp around in them. Gives Mommy a great big hug. He is now walking around in 6-year-old-girl's dress shoes and a onesie, screatching and stomping.] Quack, quack, quack, quack.
Littler: 'Cause I love you. [but how can you tell that Mommy and Daddy love each other?] They hug each other.
Little: Um. I don't know. You just say it some times.

Winter break 2011

Just a few pictures from the winter break, a little hike at Big Basin with friends and a sunset hike around the Dish.
